sg18-02102023-jpj_3518021_20231003075118.jpg According to the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Datuk Lokman Jamaan, senior enforcement director for JPJ, 175,909 summonses involving commercial vehicles have gone unpaid since 2018.

Lokman stated that, of the total, Selangor's offeders have the highest number of summonses, totaling 61,940, with each summons costing up to RM300.

The large number of violations and summonses issued demonstrates a disregard for the law and traffic regulations, and JPJ will make sure that those who have received summonses come forward and pay their past-due debts in order to prevent any action being taken against their companies.

“When a summon is issued, we (JPJ) will give a certain grace period to settle the summon, but many have failed to settle such summons.

“Therefore an operation will start at the beginning of October to remind offenders to come and settle their summons,” he told Bernama after an operation here yesterday

He added that action was taken against 55 lorries within an hour of the operation being launched. jpj-2.jpg

According to Lokman, 23 of the 239 offences identified had expired licences or no licence at all but were driving commercial vehicles.

“Imagine 23 commercial vehicles are being driven by drivers who do not have a licence or their licence had expired. This is certainly going to pose a serious danger to other road users, especially vehicles that a smaller in size.

“We know that whenever commercial vehicles are involved in accidents, the drivers of the commercial vehicles do not suffer serious injuries but others involved in the accidents may suffer serious injuries or in many cases, such accidents can be fatal,” he said.

He also mentioned that during last month's Special Ops for Motorcycles, 135,446 notices or summonses were issued for various offences such as lack of insurance, licence, road tax and violation of traffic rules.

The JPJ also seized 6,567 motorcycles that did not meet the specifications or guidelines outlined in the safety regulations, with many offenders ranging in age from 16 to 35.
