A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association (PEKEMA) and Dongfeng Motor Industry Imp. & Exp. Co., Ltd. (DFMIEC), a division of the top Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DFMC), aims to transform the automotive landscape in Malaysia and hasten the expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) industry in the area.

Through this historic partnership, there is a shared goal to encourage EV development and hasten the creation of a strong EV ecosystem, not only in Malaysia but also throughout the rest of the region. PEKEMA, a company with a long history in the importation and trade of vehicles from developed nations, is currently changing its strategy by promoting the most recent EV technology.

Datuk Hj Mohamed Nazari Noordin, PEKEMA Malaysia's acting president and vice president, said the partnership between PEKEMA and DFMIEC shows how committed both organisations are to keeping up with the changing automotive sector. PEKEMA is on a journey that will not only change the association's course but also significantly impact Malaysia's electrification future through this partnership with the Chinese state-owned company.

In order to analyse and navigate the Malaysian and Southeast Asian EV market landscape, PEKEMA and DFMIEC will work together. Along with introducing cutting-edge and environmentally friendly mobility options, this partnership will help stimulate the economy and create job opportunities, supporting the Malaysian government's ambition for a more sustainable future.

Together, PEKEMA and DFMIEC will invest in the development of EV assembly and production facilities in Malaysia. This involves collaborating closely with the appropriate stakeholders in Malaysia to simplify the vehicle importation procedure and advance the growth of the ecosystem for electric vehicles.

This alliance will also strengthen PEKEMA's ability to promote diverse car brands and goods and expand its after-sales service network. Furthermore, with the intention of obtaining special incentives from the Malaysian government, this collaboration will launch joint investments in the production and assembling of electric car components.

History will remember the MoU between PEKEMA and DFMIEC for a very long time. It stands for PEKEMA's dedication to a more sustainable, environmentally friendly, and clean future for Malaysia and Southeast Asia. This partnership also represents a significant change in PEKEMA's business strategy as it moves away from traditional imports and towards the electric mobility revolution.

The first right-hand drive NEV (New Energy Vehicle) model from PV Oversea DFMIEC will be introduced to the market by the middle of next year, according to Zhao Xiaojie, the company's chief marketing officer.

"Today is the first stop for the RHD model collaboration, and we have gathered in Malaysia. The gravity of our partnership and Malaysia's strong support for NEVs have both been taken into consideration when making this choice, according to Xiaojie.

He continued by saying that DFMIEC would prioritise local production in Malaysia going forward in order to provide ASEAN nations with better EV products.

Azrul Reza Aziz, the CEO of the Malaysian Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), cited the commitment of PEKEMA as a group to creating a technologically cutting-edge, sustainably-minded automotive ecosystem that can compete on a global scale. It perfectly complements MARii's mission to lead Malaysia's automotive sector's development into a significant player on the global stage.
