Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), and Chargeplus Sdn Bhd (Charge+), a division of Charge+ Pte Ltd., a well-known supplier of EV charging solutions in Singapore and Southeast Asia, have launched their cooperative cross-border endeavour. Customers would be able to use EV charging stations in Singapore and Malaysia through this agreement, improving their EV driving experience.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the August 2023 TNB Energy Conference to formally commit to this partnership. By establishing a smooth cross-border network of EV charging infrastructure, the MoU supports the National Energy Transition Roadmap's objective of establishing 10,000 EV public charging stations by 2025.

Dato' Seri Ir. Baharin Din, President and CEO of TNB, said that this partnership presents a chance to investigate the viability of international roaming agreements from a technological and business standpoint, providing drivers of electric vehicles with a level of convenience never before seen.

With intentions to grow into a network of 30,000 charging stations across five Southeast Asian countries by 2030, this Memorandum of Understanding establishes Malaysia as the leader in cross-border roaming alliance in the EV charging industry. This extension fits with TNB's mission to provide seamless services for consumers while also improving charging convenience.

The MoU was exchanged between TNB Program Director of PMO Electric Vehicle, Wan Ahmad Zam Zam Wan Abd Wahab and Charge+ Chief Executive Officer, Goh Chee Kiong. It was witnessed by Transport Minister, Anthony Loke Siew Fook; TNB Chief Operating Officer, Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan; TNB Chief Global Business Solutions Officer, Datuk Ahmad Hushairi Ibrahim and TNB Chief Retail Officer, Kamal Arifin A. Rahman.

Baharin emphasised that by addressing concerns regarding EV appropriateness for long distance and cross-border travel, this cooperation would encourage broader use of EVs in Malaysia and help to lower carbon emissions.

Customers will also be able to more easily utilise charging assets of both firms thanks to this strategic agreement, which will make cross-border charging at TNB Electron charging stations easier for users of the Charge+ and GO TO-U smartphone applications.

We have already written on two other comparable cross-border joint ventures this year: Gentari's partnership with City Energy (Singapore) and Evolt (Thailand and Asia Pacific). Feel free to read-up on those too.
