Self-driving cars could be on British roads as early as 2026, according to Transport Secretary Mark Harper, as the government begins developing a legal framework for technology that it hopes will create jobs and attract investment.

“Potentially, we could see fully self-driving vehicles on the road in the next couple of years,” Harper said in an interview with Bloomberg News. “So 2026, that sort of time frame.”

Industry observers have praised the action, which aims to support the sector's safe commercial development, despite the fact that details are still scarce.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has developed an international scale that divides driving automation into six levels: fully manual (0), fully automatic (6), and somewhere in between.

The new legal framework is thought to open the door for "level four" autonomous driving, which would permit completely autonomous vehicles in certain scenarios.

Amidst accusations that the UK has been lagging behind, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been eager to compete in the rapidly expanding and cutting-edge fields of automation and artificial intelligence (AI).
The UK government has stated that the new legislation will ensure clear legal liability for who is responsible in self-driving car accidents.
