Suzuki Super Carry X Limited Debuts As Rugged Lifestyle Kei Truck
Suzuki Super Carry X Limited kei truck
Risen from the ashes of World War 2, kei cars are the workhorses that helped to rebuild a war-torn Japan, providing an avenue for less-fortunate folks to own a four-wheeled vehicle. Decades after its inception, kei cars are now being popularised as a quirky, lifestyle-oriented vehicle that boasts a unique charm in a much smaller footprint than conventional vehicles.
This surge in kei cars' popularity has prompted Japanese automakers to produce more and more quirky, lifestyle-oriented models, including this new leisure kei truck by Suzuki. Touted as the Suzuki Super Carry X Limited, this rugged kei truck is based on the extended cab variant of the eleventh-gen Suzuki Carry, with said modification granting a roomier cabin at the expense of a shorter flatbed.
Unlike the bare-boned commercial Carry trucks, this limited edition Super Carry features a more rugged and outdoorsy design. Key exterior design cues include the special black decals on the sides that mimic bolt-on metal panels, plus black accents and finishes on the front grille, its LED headlight surround, side mirror caps, as well as the 12-inch steelie wheels this rugged kei truck rides on.
The Suzuki Super Carry X Limited comes standard in four colour options
Black decals aside, the Super Carry X Limited comes in only four exterior hue options – Moss Grey, Silky Silver, Cool Khaki Pearl, and Bluish Black Pearl.
On board, the Super Carry X Limited comes with a rather simplistic cabin design, boasting plenty of space in spite of its miniscule facade. Thanks to its extended cab design, there's extra storage space behind the two seats, with the driver's side capable of reclining by 40-degrees and sliding by 180 MM. Additionally, the whole cabin can also be transformed into a small dining space for one once you flat-fold the front passenger seat.
Beneath its rugged facade lies a familiar yet reliable powertrain setup. As per kei car’s regulations, the Super Carry X Limited is powered by a 658-CC 3-cyl petrol mill rated at 50 HP and 59 NM. Mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox, this kei truck comes standard with a dedicated all-wheel drive (AWD) system, promising it to be a decent mild off-roader, which Suzuki deems good enough for your occasional camping and adventure trips.
Now available in the Japanese domestic market (JDM), the all-new Suzuki Super Carry X Limited retails from JPY 1.513 million (RM49,844) for the baseline 5-speed manual variant, while the 4-speed automatic version is tagged higher at JPY 1.612 million (RM53,106). Predictably, both models are priced higher than the standard, bare-boned Super Carry truck, which currently retails at only JPY 1.058 million (RM34,854).
Regardless of its slight premiums, we’d reckon that this rugged kei truck would serve as a great alternative to other lifestyle-oriented kei cars, with most of them now boasting rugged, crossover-style design cues.
