An all-electric GTI model is set to arrive later in 2026, according to VW design boss Andreas Mindt.

While the rest of the world is still waiting for the mid-life update on the current-gen GTI model, it appears that Volkswagen has its future plans all intact already. As revealed by VW’s design boss Andreas Mindt via Instagram, the Wolfsburg-based marque is poised to launch an all-electric successor to the GTI later in 2026.

This sketch image penned by Mindt showcases the original Golf GTI MK1 alongside its future all-electric successor, which will be based on the ID. GTI concept EV. Said image was accompanied by a caption that reads, “The Golf GTI was first unveiled at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show with a production run of 5000 units. To date, we have sold more than 2.8 million. In 2026, we will introduce an electric version of this iconic model.”

The last sentence of the caption suggests that VW is ready to produce the all-electric successor to its most iconic nameplate, which is due to arrive later in 2026. This also confirms our previous report, where VW boss Thomas Schafer hinted that the production version of the ID. GTI concept will be ready by 2026.

While the VW ID. GTI concept was introduced without the ‘Golf’ moniker, it appears that the sketch image suggests its production version will carry the iconic nameplate. Also important to note is that the ID. GTI itself is actually based on a whole new concept model known as the ID.2all, which is touted to be the all-electric successor to both the Polo and Golf hatchbacks, judging from its overall dimensions.

This also contradicts several previous statements by VW, with the German automaker planning to introduce the upcoming ninth-gen, all-electric Golf model, which will use the SSP platform instead of the MEB EV platform used by both the ID.2all and the ID. GTI.

Aside from that, there’s also a trademark registration filed for a new GTI logo with the ‘I’ letter, which stands for ‘injection’, replaced by a lightning bolt to indicate the car’s all-electric facade. However, we’re not quite sure whether this new emblem is reserved for the ninth-gen Golf or the upcoming EV hatch based on the ID. GTI.

Regardless of that, an all-electric, GTI-badged hot hatch doesn’t sound so bad, especially in this day and age where SUVs and crossovers rule the streets around the world.
