The European Union has issued a new decision affecting automobile manufacturers. Beginning in July 2024, vehicles must have an Event Data Recorder, or EDR for short, which functions similarly to a black box.

EDR will only be required for vehicles in the M1 and N1 classes. For those who don't know, M1 refers to passenger vehicles with no more than 8 seats, while N1 refers to cargo vehicles with no more than 3,500 kilograms.

Motor1 reported that the EDR will be installed in the cars' airbag systems. It won't be eliminated voluntarily. Information currently available indicates that the system will activate upon the activation of the airbag sensor. Data about the vehicle's position, speed, braking, and vibration will be gathered.

Based on the information it gathers, the EDR system will automatically use the eCall system to contact for assistance if it determines that there is an emergency. The European Commission shared information that states the car owner will keep ownership of all data. On the other hand, authorities will have access to this data in an emergency. arenaev_001.jpg
