Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD is reportedly planning to push forward its international presence by establishing a new EV factory in Mexico.

This move could potentially signal BYD's strategic initiative to create an export hub, which would target the North American market. The primary aim of this effort is to cement its position as the world's leading EV manufacturer, potentially surpassing rivals Tesla - a feat BYD recently achieved through  sales volume in the fourth quarter of 2023.

One key component for BYD’s sales surge was the availability of more affordable offerings and a diverse product lineup. While most of BYD's sales are concentrated in China, the company is progressively expanding its global footprint. In the Malaysian market, BYD launched two models in a span of just a year - the highly popular Atto 3 and compact Dolphin. The brand is set to also launch the Tesla Model 3-rivalling Seal saloon this month too.

The initiation of a feasibility study for the Mexican plant is a significant step forward, with negotiations already underway regarding crucial aspects such as the factory's location. According to Zhou Zou, BYD's Mexico country manager, “having an overseas production hub is crucial to the establishment of a truly international brand”.

Having said that, BYD's expansion plans raise concerns among major U.S. automakers about potential competition. BYD's decision to enter Mexico's automotive sector, which hosts a strong presence of global industry giants, underscores the country's strategic importance as a manufacturing base closely linked to the U.S. automotive industry.

Furthermore, BYD’s focus on its Latin America expansion plan, which includes the establishment of a US$620 million industrial complex in Brazil, signifies the calculated growth potential, especially for its electric vehicle (EV) offerings in the region. At the same time, it also reflects on BYD’s commitment to diversifying its manufacturing footprint and tapping into emerging markets beyond China.

BYD has already launched a variety of EV products in the Mexican market. These include models like the Han, Tang, Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal, as well as the Song Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Additionally, they offer several pure electric buses and commercial chassis products.

Moving forward, the Chinese giant is looking at vehicle manufacturing to include shipping services through ownership of vehicle transport vessels to combat the shortage in shipping services for overseas vehicle transportation. In December, BYD acquired the Explorer 1, a ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) vessel with lower carbon emissions, capable of transporting up to 7,000 vehicles.
