- Toyota Is Experimenting On New Carbon Emission Engine Filter
Toyota has received a lot of flak for choosing to concentrate on a wide range of alternative fuels and electrification options rather than fully commit to electric vehicles, but as other businesses experience slower-than-expected growth, that strategy is beginning to seem more sensible.
The massive Japanese automaker is currently testing a new engine that can remove carbon from the air in addition to developing hydrogen powertrains and strongly supporting hybrid technologies.
The carbon capture engine made its debut as a component of a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain in a race car, GR Corolla, last year. Although it had zero emissions already, the additional filtration system has the ability to actually remove carbon from the surrounding air.
Two filters and a fluid reservoir are used by Toyota's carbon capture system to trap carbon dioxide. It draws no energy, and the engine's heat is used to move the fluid into the reservoir. The filters, which are developed in collaboration with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, bear resemblance to the technology found in contemporary exhaust systems.
Toyota claimed that the technology would function in any motorized vehicle, including ones with gas engines, despite having tested the system in a hydrogen fuel cell car. However, more work needs to be done before the system can be made commercially viable because it currently doesn't capture as much carbon as a typical vehicle does when driven regularly.
