Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced that construction of the Northern Coastal Highway (NCH) will begin in said East Malaysia state next year. Set for completion by 2030, it will connect Miri, Brunei, Limbang, and Lawas.

The Sarawak government has allocated RM6.1 billion to the 88-kilometre-long dual-carriage four lane project. According to Abang Johari, the highway will play a critical role in creating significant economic opportunities, particularly in Limbang and Lawas.

The Sarawak government had also identified a potential port site in Lawas to complement the area's new airport. There would also be a private resort development overlooking Brunei Bay.

He further elaborated on Limbang’s development plans, which include expanding the airport's runway to accommodate larger aircraft types. Furthermore, efforts are underway to find a suitable location for a resort aimed at boosting the regional tourism industry.

Abang Johari also emphasised the highway's positive impact on Lawas, mentioning that the area will soon benefit from a new port and airport.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that Phase 1 of the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (SSLR), which will connect Miri to Limbang and Lawas without passing through Brunei, is already under construction.
