Good news for the 200,000 Malaysians who rely on diesel-powered pick-up trucks and SUVs to earn a living: the Ministry of Finance has officially approved an additional 100 litres of subsidised diesel per month under the Budi Madani Diesel (Budi Diesel) programme.

This update brings the total monthly eligibility for these vehicle owners to 300 litres, providing a much-needed buffer for those who use their vehicles for small-to-medium business operations, family needs, and travel to rural or inland areas.

Is the 300L quota enough for you?

With the Budi Diesel programme now fully operational across the country, nearly 200,000 recipients (174,000 in Peninsular Malaysia and 22,000 in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan) are benefitting from the RM2.10 per litre subsidised rate.

If you own a diesel pick-up or an SUV (officially classified as a jip by the Road Transport Department) and haven’t seen the increase yet, you can check your eligibility or submit an application at the official Budi Madani portal.

5 Proven Ways To Make Your 300L Quota Last Longer

While 300 litres is a generous increase, every kilometre counts when you're managing a budget. Here are five practices that help reduce fuel consumption and maintain engine health:

#1 Lose the "Dead Weight": Pick-ups are workhorses, but carrying around unnecessary cargo is a silent fuel-killer. If you aren't using your tools, heavy equipment, or extra gear for a specific trip, unload it. Every extra kilogram requires more energy to move, especially in stop-and-go traffic.

#2 Master Your Tire Pressure: Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance, forcing your engine to work harder. Check your tire pressure at least once a month, ensure it matches the manufacturer’s recommended PSI (found on the sticker inside your driver-side door).

#3 Ditch the Idle: Modern diesel engines don't need to "warm up" for long periods. If you're going to be stationary for more than a minute, kill the engine. Idling burns fuel at 0 km/l and creates unnecessary carbon buildup in your engine.

#4 Drive Smoothly (The "Eco" Way): Sudden acceleration and hard braking are the enemies of fuel economy. By anticipating traffic and gradually accelerating, you can significantly improve your mileage. Treat your accelerator pedal like it’s made of glass!

#5 Stick to Service Intervals: A clogged air filter or dirty fuel injectors will choke your engine’s efficiency. Keeping up with your regular maintenance ensures your engine "breathes" easily and burns fuel as cleanly and efficiently as possible.

300 litres is a solid upgrade, but for those of us doing heavy cross-state logistics or running a small business, fuel management is still a daily game. Does this new limit cover your monthly needs, or do you find yourself watching the fuel gauge drop a bit too fast?
