- Two-Hour Parking Limit To Ease Traffic Congestion In Penang
According to The Vibes, Penang is considering the possibility of restricting parking hours in specific areas of the town and enforcing different hours for the loading and unloading of large vehicles in an attempt to relieve the island's increasingly severe traffic congestion.
By July, the Tanjong Tokong-Tanjung Bungah section and the vicinity of the main Bayan Baru roundabout will have two smart traffic lights installed to improve traffic distribution and eliminate lengthy lineups at traffic signals, according to the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
In order to alleviate the daily bottlenecks, the island requires a multifaceted strategy, according to Penang Island Mayor and MBPP president Datuk Anthony Rajendran. He also believes that improving public transportation is one approach to solving the issue aside from fully implementing the Penang Transport Master Plan.
The first of the measures, according to the mayor, would be to limit council parking lots in certain George Town commercial areas to two hours of parking. Owners of vehicles parked for longer than that would be subject to fines. Furthermore, loading and unloading of heavy vehicles will not be allowed during peak hours.
Additionally, the council is collaborating with Rapid Penang to promote the use of public transportation among Penangites.
“Not many people may know but public transport around Penang is mostly free for Malaysian commuters. The public needs to use more public transport instead of driving into town where there would be congestion,” Rajendran added.
