Analysts: Penang Mutiara LRT Important To Improve Urban Mobility And Tourism
The Penang Mutiara Route Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is seen as an important solution for reducing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility in Penang.
This project, which connects Silicon Island to Komtar, and eventually expand to Penang Sentral in Seberang Perai, is projected to boost tourism and make it easier to visit UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Sites.
Abi Sofian Abdul Hamid, a transportation analyst and expert, stresses the significance of incorporating support networks like shuttle services and parking facilities to ensure the LRT system's efficacy. He also emphasised the possibilities for transit-oriented “last-mile” development around LRT stations, which would contribute to green transportation and lower carbon emissions.
Abi further added that with the federal government taking over the project, there is hope for improved project management, leveraging the expertise of corporations such as MRT Corp.
Meanwhile, YS Chan, a Tourism and Transport Business Consultant, emphasised the project's benefits for industrial tourism, highlighting Penang's high-tech manufacturing capabilities.
Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow meanwhile stressed socioeconomic benefits of the LRT project which would include reduction in traffic congestion. Although it may not solve all congestion issues, it is an important step towards addressing them.
The 29 KM LRT project, which includes 20 stops and two interchange stations, is scheduled to begin later this year. It will also have infrastructure for KTMB commuter trains and ETS connectivity, with plans to be operational by 2030.
Furthermore, despite concerns about the impact on ferry services, experts believe they will in actuality complement each other by providing a variety of travel options for both locals and tourists.
