- Penang LRT Project Progressing Steadily - MRT Corp
Construction of the Mutiara Line Penang LRT project is on track, according to the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation on Sunday.
MRT Corp, as the project’s owner stated that it has been actively advancing the Mutiara line Penang LRT project, with obtaining approval for advance works on April 15 being one of its main initiatives.
This comes after MCA vice-president Tan Teik Cheng voiced concerns about the project's seeming lack of physical progress despite its January groundbreaking, as reported by MalaysiaKini.
With 86 plots of land secured to date and gazetted ahead of the intended date of October 2025, the firm also emphasized that it has achieved great progress in terms of land purchases, assuring the public that the LRT Mutiara Line project is still on track and on schedule.
In addition, MRT Corp said that SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, the main contractor for the first package of the LRT line, is fulfilling post-award conditions before issuing an official notice-to-proceed, emphasizing that utility relocation is a critical aspect of pre-construction work that must be completed before any station or viaduct-related construction can begin.
The Mutiara Line, with an estimated cost of RM10 billion to RM13 billion, is considered the largest inland infrastructure project on mainland Penang. The 29.5 km elevated LRT line will have 21 stations, starting from the Silicon Island off Batu Maung.
It will then pass through Weld Quay, its main interchange, the Penang Bridge, and end at the Penang Sentral transport hub in Butterworth.
