- Ford Mustang 60th Anniversary Gains Cool Wheels
Ford is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the devoted horse's production with the Mustang 60th Anniversary Package, which will be available in 2025. A 60th anniversary is significant enough because of how many years Ford can get away with celebrating its flagship, which made its debut in 1964 for the 1965 model year.
The Ford Mustang was the brainchild of Lee Iacocca, who is better known for his later legendary exploits, such as saving Chrysler from bankruptcy. But, before doing so, Iacocca wanted something to appeal to young people while he was CEO of Ford. So the Mustang debuted, kicking off the pony car segment.
That was sixty years ago, and Ford is commemorating the occasion with a limited-edition release. Mustang senior designer Stefan Taylor claims that the commemorative sports car's styling was "directly inspired by the clean silhouette of the original car."
During the design process, it focused on the 1965 Mustang's finely detailed elements, such as the fender badges and wheel center caps. Our goal was to capture the feel of the '65 while remaining true to the Mustang as the modern sports car that it is.
Only 1,965 models will receive the anniversary package, which honors the year of the first-generation Mustang. The package will be available for the 2025 Mustang only in GT Premium trim, which includes the 5.0-liter V8. Fans can get the package on coupe or convertible models that have both automatic and manual transmission.
The 60th Anniversary Package is more of a touch-up than a complete redesign, evoking memories of classic Mustangs. The standout features include fender badges in a bright red finish that read "GT 60 Years" and "5.0," as well as side graphics inspired by the original Mustang's rocker panel stripes. The Mustang cabin features a serialized plaque, as well as silver mirror caps for models with Race Red and Vapor Blue paint that resemble the original chrome mirrors. Chrome does indeed rule.
The custom 20-inch wheels are also great. In fact, this special-edition Mustang exemplifies why five-spoke wheels are the pinnacle of wheel design. From the Porsche Fuchs rim to the Mustang SVT Cobra's alloys, five silver lines connected by a hub are both simple and sporty. The 60th Anniversary's wheels are a modern take on the classic, chunky design of the first-generation Mustang.
Ford has not revealed how much the 60th Anniversary Package will cost, stating that pricing will be announced closer to the release date, which is expected in late 2024. Starting this summer, Mustang fans can place orders at their local Ford dealerships. If the price is too high, fans can still get retro-inspired digital gauges for their new Mustangs, which will be available as an over-the-air update to commemorate the model's milestone birthday.
