- Upcoming BYD PHEV Pick-Up Truck Will Be Called ‘Shark’
Teased ahead of its planned debut at this week's Auto China 2024 show is the BYD Shark PHEV pick-up truck.
Chinese New Energy Vehicles (NEV) giant BYD has rapidly expanded in recent years. Besides luxury SUVs and EV supercars marketed through its main BYD banner and several other sub-brands, the NEV-making giants is also set to enter the pick-up truck space very soon.
At the upcoming Auto China 2024 show later this week, said pick-up truck will officially debut, and reports online indicate it will be christened as ‘Shark’. Said name was reportedly revealed prior through trademark applications the Chinese firm recently filed in Australia – a key pick-up truck market.
The Shark (top) is tipped to harness the same DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) PHEV powertrain as seen in the Fang Cheng Bao 5 luxury 4x4 SUV (below).
Moreover, the ‘Shark’ name coincides with BYD’s knack for naming its vehicles after sea-borne creatures – i.e. Dolphin and Seal. Crucially, the upcoming Shark pick-up truck will also feature a powertrain will also be electrified – specifically, it will harness a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup.
BYD has confirmed with various sources online that the Shark will harness its novel Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) powertrain tech. This calls for the pairing of a small petrol engine with large battery packs and a powerful e-motor(s) – likely similar to what’s primed in the Fang Cheng Bao 5 luxury 4x4 SUV.
For reference, the Fang Cheng Bao 5 model mentioned employs a 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbo petrol mill that’s augmented by dual e-motors. Combined, this package outputs over 730 HP, boasting up to 125 KM of electric-only range and up to 1,200 KM of total hybrid petrol-electric range.
Reports further indicate that a full-electric version of the Shark is expected to surface later, but this remains to be seen still. Nevertheless, even with the PHEV setup detailed, the Shark is poised to stand toe-to-toe closely against key rivals like the Ford Ranger PHEV.

Whilst BYD has released the dark teaser image featured, the Shark has been spied completely undisguised recently. From which, we can see how through its exterior styling at least, the Shark boasts all the attractively rugged design qualities expected of any pick-up truck.
The same applies to its cabin, though spyshots do show how BYD’s twist to what a utilitarian cabin ought to be appearing rather posh and high-tech – much like what’s see in the bulk of its fast-selling passenger electric vehicles (EVs).
That aside, details are scant for now, but we can expect more once the Shark officially debuts at this week’s Auto China 2024 show mentioned.
