Peugeot's latest badge seen on the recently launched Peugeot 408. This, sadly, is what many Indonesians will miss out on following Stellantis' decision to pull the French brand out of said republic.

Earlier today, we’ve learnt through online sources out of neighbouring Indonesia that global automaking giant Stellantis has officially pulled the Puegeot brand out of said market. This was confirmed by the brand’s distributors PT Astra International with various Indonesian news outlets too.

"Based on information from Stellantis, the principal of Peugeot, Stellantis has made a strategic decision to halt Peugeot sales in Indonesia. This is part of Stellantis' business growth strategy in the ASEAN region," said Rokky Irvayandi, head of Astra's Peugeot Sales Operation.

Reports online further indicated that the brand’s Indonesian sales operations was halted since Thursday last week, thus marking the end of the French silver lion marque presence in the neighbouring ASEAN republic after a rather lengthy 52 years – it first entered which in 1972.

Similar to Malaysia prior, distributors PT Astra International sold just three Peugeot models to in recent years, those being the 3008 and 5008 duo (left), as well as the 2008 (right) compact crossover.

Similar to Malaysia, distributors PT Astra International was flogging a crossover SUV-exclusive line-up in Indonesia comprised of just three models – the 2008 compact crossover, as well as the 3008 and 5008 two- and three-row crossover SUVs duo.

Despite the cease in sales and distribution, said Indonesian automotive conglomerate has committed to continue providing after-sales support through the four existing Peugeot official service centres still operating in Indonesia.

Though Peugeot debuted in Indonesia in the early 1970s, the French marque experienced respectable popularity amongst Indonesia buyers through the 1990s and 2000s. However, sales has slowly waned since, with some even reporting the brand shifted just   in Indonesia last year.

How Peugeot's exit out of Indonesia, one of the ASEAN region's largest markets, will affect Stellantis' regional growth plan using its plant in Gurun, Kedah, remains to be seen.

Clearly, poor sales prompted parent firm Stellantis to cease the brand’s efforts in Indonesia, and it remains unclear at present if Peugeot will be rebooted by said parent company in the future. By the way, the latter case is what recently occurred locally in Malaysia.

How this will affect Stellantis’ ambitions of rapid expansion and growth in the ASEAN region by leveraging its Malaysia-based plant in Gurun, Kedah, also remains to be seen.
