It appears that there's a growing number of younger-aged Americans that are keen on purchasing Chinese EVs.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are currently a hot topic in the automotive industry and China seems to be leading the EV market in many countries.

However, the American government led by President Joe Biden has elected to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs starting Aug, citing the move as a means to protect local American jobs. The tariffs will also apply to China-made EV components, which will be imposed at 25%, up from 7.5%, starting Jan 2026.

Said tariffs will apply to both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Though the American government is committed to restricting Chinese automobile products on its soil, there is still a 30-day public comment period open, but it closes on June 28.

Ahead of which, a survey conducted by Auto Pacific showed some interesting trends among the younger Americans. After polling 800 respondents aged 18 to 80 on their interest in Chinese EVs, 35% said they were hesitant to consider an EV with a Chinese badge.

Respondents aged 60 and up were apprehensive about purchasing a Chinese EV, and many believe this stems from on-going tensions between both China and America.

However, the survey also finds that up to 76% of Americans aged 40 and younger would consider buying a Chinese EV.

Respondents aged 60 and up, were less likely to consider a Chinese-badged EV, possibly due to the tense relationship between the two countries.

However, 16% of the 800 respondents said they would be more willing to purchase a Chinese EV if it was made in America, as it would view it as more American and support the local economy and workers. Altogether, 76% of Americans aged below 40 would consider buying a Chinese EV.

Data security concerns were expressed by all age groups, but younger buyers were less concerned about privacy than older respondents.  Auto Pacific's team also noted that general awareness of auto brands from China, largely due to exposure on social media, is high amongst American buyers who were likely or moderately likely to buy an EV.
