The upcoming Hyundai Inster is teased as the brand's cheapest EV model to date.

Hyundai has teased its first-ever all-electric supermini, the Hyundai Inster, ahead of its global debut at the upcoming Busan International Mobility Show in late June this year. Heavily based on the Casper crossover supermini, the new Inster is slated to be Hyundai’s cheapest EV to date.

The Casper similarities are so heavy, so much so that the Inster will be known as Casper Electric for its native Korean market. While its ICE-powered twin is exclusively available in South Korea, the Inster EV will be available in selected global markets.

No surprise, the new Inster shares many similarities with the Casper supermini

From the set of teaser images published by the Korean automaker, the Inster shares many similarities with the Casper in terms of design. Among the similarities we’ve spotted are the rounded LED DRLs at the front, crossover-style extended wheel arches, the four-spoke wheels, as well as its overall crossover mini hatch body style.

Being an all-electric product, the Inster also appears to adopt some styling cues from Hyundai’s Ioniq EV lineup, notably its pixelated LED taillights, plus a large Inster badge placed at the centre of the tailgate.

As of now, Hyundai has yet to unveil any details regarding the Inster’s innards, although we can expect it to be somewhat on par with other Hyundai EV models of late. As for its powertrain, Hyundai said the Inster will use an integrated drive module sourced from BorgWarner, while both its power output and battery specs remain in the dark for now.

While it is easy to speculate that the Inster will underpin the same K1 platform as the Casper given both models’ similarities, said platform is only used on ICE-based models, indicating that the Inster might underpin the E-GMP platform used on many Hyundai and Kia EVs instead.

Slated to make its global debut later this month, Hyundai is targeting a sub-€20,000 (RM100,000 approx.) price tag for the new Inster, hence making it the most affordable EV model from the brand yet. As we mentioned earlier, the Inster EV will be available in selected international markets, meaning that there’s a very slim chance that we might see this quirky EV supermini making its landfall into our market sometime in the future.
