- Sarawak H2 Hub Launched, Integrating Modular Hydrogen Production Units Planned
The Sarawak State Government has marked a new milestone in its hydrogen energy adoption with the launch of the new Sarawak H2 Hub in Bintulu. The state’s first mass hydrogen production dacility was launched by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg earlier this week.
This global-scale hydrogen production facility will be developed jointly by SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd (SEDCE) and Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd (Gentari) through a newly formed joint venture company in accordance with the MOU inked back in 2023.
The new company will handle the development, construction, ownership, operation, and maintenance of the Sarawak H2 Hub, including investing in hydrogen production trains. The hub will standardise hydrogen production in Bintulu using a ‘plug and play’ concept, integrating modular hydrogen production units and pre-developed utilities.
Key initiatives include Project H2ornbill with Japanese company ENEOS and Sumitomo Corp., as well as Project H2biscus with South Korean firms Samsung Engineering, Lotte Chemical, and KNOC.
This effort advances Sarawak's objective of becoming a commercial hydrogen producer by 2027 and a prominent player in the global hydrogen economy.
Michèle Azalbert, Gentari’s Chief Hydrogen Officer stated, “This joint venture aims to establish Sarawak as a key player in the green hydrogen sector, creating economic value through new industries, investments, high-value jobs, and technological innovation.”
Meanwhile, Robert Hardin, CEO of SEDC Energy, added, “This partnership will make Sarawak a hydrogen production hub for the region. The ‘plug and play’ concept will attract more investors and partners. Though challenging, this journey will build resilience and readiness for future challenges, elevating Sarawak and Malaysia’s energy economy.”
The Sarawak H2 Hub is set to play a pivotal role in the region's clean energy transition, driving economic growth and sustainability.
