The Volkswagen Group is advancing the digitalisation of its model portfolio with a clear focus on the Chinese market. Beginning 2026, the China Electronic Architecture (CEA) will be adopted in locally produced all-electric Volkswagen vehicles.

This new architecture is being co-developed by CARIAD China and XPeng to cater specifically to Volkswagen’s needs, as per the Master Agreement formalised recently. Additionally, CARIAD China will provide cutting-edge technologies, including advanced autonomous driving systems (ADAS) and smart cockpit features.

The introduction of the CEA platform marks a significant milestone in Volkswagen Group China’s ‘In China for China’ strategy which enables localised development processes, leveraging the innovative strengths of the Chinese market.

With this, for the first time, Volkswagen is introducing a local electrical/electronic architecture (E/E architecture) tailored exclusively to the technological and economic needs of the Chinese market. This development is pivotal for Volkswagen's ambition to become a leading manufacturer of intelligent, fully networked electric vehicles in China.

Additionally, in new vehicles equipped with CEA technology, three powerful central computers will manage electronic functions. This approach reduces the number of ECUs by 30%, leading to significant cost and system complexity reductions, while enhancing performance and safety.

The new architecture's effective design and powerful processing capacity make it possible to integrate sophisticated applications—like autonomous driving features—more quickly and simply.

Furthermore, since upgrades may be applied to entire zones rather than just specific ECUs, system software changes can be created and applied more quickly. Digital services and functions can be quickly expanded at any time thanks to these capabilities.

In the end, Volkswagen can provide buyers with customised digital services through the CEA even after they have made a purchase, such as short-term updates for automated driving features or increased battery life.
