- New Citroën Basalt Coupe SUV Hinted For Malaysia

Apart from its main Peugeot marque and new China-born Leapmotor brand, seasoned readers and followers of CariCarz.com will know by now that the newly established Stellantis Malaysia firm looks set to reboot the Citroën brand locally too.
Fuelling that further is the fact that its Managing Director, Jamie Francis Morais, took to LinkedIn over the weekend, to drop a new hint surrounding the firm’s plans with said mainstream French brand. In said post, the exec indicated that Stellantis Malaysia looks set introduce the new Citroën Basalt pictured below.

Revealed late last week in production form by Stellantis’ India-based arm, the Basalt is essentially a coupe-roofed offshoot of the existing Citroën C3 and C3 Aircross compact crossover SUV. In fact, the Basalt reportedly shares the same underpinning, thus explaining some shared design touches too.
Set to enter the Indian market next month and rival against the Tata Curvv, Stellantis have yet to release details surround the new Citroën Basalt. However, credible sources indicate that the C3’s 1.2-litre naturally aspirated and turbocharged 3-cyl petrol mill will be made available here too.

Outputs range between 80 and 115 NM (NA) up to 108 HP and 190 NM (turbo), though expect Malaysia-bound version hinted by Jamie to arrive with either mills paired with the same 6-speed automatic box from the C3. Apart from his post caption, Jamie didn’t divulge further details.
Nevertheless, this is a notable development from Stellantis Malaysia indeed. As a refresher, the firm has gotten into full swing of operations earlier this year firstly through its Peugeot brand, launching the new 408 premium ‘fastback’ crossover earlier this year too.
Later at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024, the firm officially re-launched the Peugeot Landtrek pick-up truck as a locally-built (CKD) offering. Previewed here too was the Leapmotor C10 EV SUV from the firm’s latest Chinese joint-venture, plus both the Citroën C3 Aircross and Ami Buggy Concept.
Expect more details to surface in the coming weeks and months, though we reckon we’ll hear from Stellantis Malaysia through its Leapmotor brand first given what Jamie said to local daily NST in a recent interview.
