Asphalt core testing will be carried out on all roads in the Mega Road Resurfacing (MRR) 2024 project, a large-scale road resurfacing throughout Selangor that will commence in two weeks, The Star has reported.
Aside from ensuring compliance with aggregate thickness, asphalt core testing is critical for evaluating the quality, durability, and thickness of compacted asphalt core sections, which guarantees the road's structural integrity, according to Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Izham Hashim.
“Core testing will be done at random spots and if issues are found in the newly resurfaced road, it will allow for readjustment to better the road’s density, long-life and performance,” Izham said. The core test on freshly laid roads is a standard operating procedure to ensure it meets road construction standards, he added. Waze-pothole-Selangor-report-1-e1513137038183-630x329.jpg

The state government invested RM50 million in 2023 on the MRR project, which included extensive road widening and maintenance to enhance amenities for residents.

The roads slated for repair were chosen based on the volume of public complaints, as reported via X (formerly Twitter) or the Infrasel app, which is managed by state-owned subsidiary Infrasel Sdn Bhd.

Around 60% of Selangor's roads, some of which are between 30 and 40 years old, have "expired," according to a 2021 report by The Star, and this is the cause of the region's recurring potholes and flaws.

Waze and the Malaysian government collaborated in 2017 to enable Malaysians to report potholes, particularly in the Selangor and KL areas. 52,295 potholes in Selangor alone have been reported on Waze between 2019 and 2020.
Meanwhile, the federal works ministry has been allocated a budget of about RM1 billion annually, while the country's federal roads require an estimated RM4 billion in maintenance.
