Johor State Govt Set to Install AI-Powered CCTVs & Smart Traffic Lights

Johor Bahru is set to improve security and livability through the installation of AI-powered closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras by 2030.
A total of 1,800 AI-enhanced CCTV cameras will be installed in areas overseen by four local municipalities : Kulai Municipal Council, Iskandar Puteri City Council, Pasir Gudang City Council, and Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB). This announcement was made by Jafni Shukor, the head of the Johor housing and local government committee.
Data from these cameras will be channelled to smart intelligence operation centres by local council and police enforcement personnel.

The deployment includes 500 cameras each for MBJB, Iskandar Puteri, and Pasir Gudang, and 300 cameras for Kulai. The smart cameras are being installed in stages until 2027 in collaboration with the police and are meant to assist in criminal investigations and monitor vehicle movements in urban areas.
Additionally, traffic lights will be upgraded to a smart traffic light system, with new installations at key locations, including Senai International Airport. An emergency button on these traffic lights will enable road users to make distress calls, and an app will allow immediate reporting of malfunctioning lights. So far, 33 smart traffic lights have been installed in the state.

Johor Bahru Mayor Mohd Noorazam Osman reported that 380 AI cameras are already operational within MBJB’s jurisdiction, with a target of 500 by the end of 2024. These cameras enhance security by improving traffic management and emergency response times, and by enabling better service delivery through data analysis, including vehicle registration and face recognition.
The installation of these AI CCTVs will improve public safety and enable law enforcement to react to crimes more quickly in areas with heavy traffic and population. Noorazam expressed confidence that these actions will resolve safety issues and increase investor and resident confidence.
