AI-Based Traffic Rules Violation Detection Cameras Are Not New; Set Up As Proof Of Concept – Loke
According to Anthony Loke, the upgraded artificial intelligence (AI)-based violation detection cameras at particular traffic lights were set up as a proof of concept to monitor drivers' actions.
The system had already been put in place, according to the transport minister, who oversaw the ministry at the time.
He told The Star at the ministry's headquarters on Wednesday, July 12, "It is a proof of concept."
Responding to a widely circulated message that claimed the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had started a massive project to install CCTV cameras with AI technology at traffic lights, Loke said that the JPJ has begun installing AI-enhanced CCTV that can record videos of your actions at traffic lights.
Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin announced on July 4 that the state had launched an upgraded AI-based violation detection camera system to capture evidence of violations and provide data to better plan policies and enforcement action. The proof-of-concept project, which will be implemented at the accident-prone Merbau-Miri-Pujut traffic light intersection, will collect data on drivers' attitudes and behaviour and is expected to yield impressive results within one week of its launch.
The project would be trialled for six months, with the results presented to the state Transport Ministry to determine the next course of action. Lee added that the data collected would assist agencies in planning effective enforcement action based on actual situations, particularly concerning misbehaving drivers and accident hotspots.
