- Kia Completes Building Its First EV-Only Plant
Kia spent about a year remodeling its Gwangmyeong plant, which now only produces electric vehicles. While Kia has only recently held the official opening ceremony, series production of the EV3 in the factory, which spans approximately 60,000 square meters, began in the first half of the year.
With the EV4 scheduled to arrive in 2025, the old internal combustion engine plant has been significantly transformed into this facility, which emphasizes sustainability and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques like automation and water-based painting.
The remodelling break for Gwangmyeong was announced in May 2023. Insiders previously reported that new electric models with an annual capacity of 150,000 units would be built there, including the EV3, EV4, and the already available electric flagship EV9.
In October 2023, Kia revealed studies for the EV3 and EV4. While the latter is an electric saloon, the former is an electric compact SUV. Each sits beneath the well-known EV6. With these more affordable electric cars, Kia hopes to capture the mid-priced market for electric cars, flanked by the EV5 series model that will also be unveiled in October 2023.
It is anticipated that Kia will introduce models made at the new facility in the global market, since the company intends to use this new manufacturing facility as a hub for its global EV lineup.
