Pirelli Partners Bosch to Develop New ‘Intelligent Tyre’ Technology
Pirelli partners with Bosch to develop a new intelligent tyre technology that aims to improve safety, comfort, and driving.
Renowned Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli has partnered with German-based tech firm Bosch to develop an entirely new intelligent tyre technology. This new tyre technology is aimed to improve safety, comfort, sustainability, and driving dynamics.
Pirelli Cyber Tyre
In the agreement, both companies will collaborate with each other to jointly develop new software-based solutions and driving functions by using Pirelli’s proprietary Cyber Tyres, which features in-tyre sensors that can communicate directly with the vehicle. To achieve this, Pirelli will use Bosch’s ESP application to collect all the essential data and information from the tyres and process them to be transmitted to the vehicle’s electronic control system.
The Pagani Utopia hypercar is one of the first cars to feature both the Pirelli Cyber Tyre and the Bosch ESP control unit.
Prior to this new partnership, both companies had previously collaborated on a project of a similar nature with Pagani, where the Pirelli Cyber Tyres worked together with Bosch’s ESP application for the Pagani Utopia hypercar. The Pirelli Cyber Tyre technology on the Pagani Utopia transmits key tyre information to the ESP control unit, enabling optimal use of the individual properties and performance of the tyres, providing enhanced greatest safety and tailored driving conditions.
Leaning on Pirelli’s innovative Cyber Tyres and Bosch’s expertise in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) sensor technology, both companies hoped that it would be possible to collect, process, and transmit real-time tyre data to provide parameters for the vehicle's electronic control system.
As of now, neither Bosch nor Pirelli have given a timeline of when we can actually see this new technology being implemented in real-world situations. But given both companies have successfully tried out similar technologies on the Pagani Utopia, perhaps it won’t take long for them to come out with products that are ready for daily, road-legal usage.
