New Geely Thor PHEV Tech Set For Release, Boasts 2,000 KM Range & Sub-3 Litres/100 KM Economy
Chinese automaking giant Geely is poised to put its new next-gen Thor PHEV tech into mass production very soon, reports CarNewsChina.
Chinese automaking giant Geely has been embroiled in a fierce rivalry with compatriot and NEV-making giants BYD, specifically over who has the better plug-in hybrid (PHEV) tech. Now, it seems the former can finally stand toe-to-toe with the latter on this front.
According to CarNewsChina, citing details shared by Geely Auto Group CEO Gan Jiayue at the recent 2024 World New Energy Vehicles Congress (WNEVC), Geely is poised to put its new next-generation ‘Thor’ PHEV powertrain tech into mass production.
The site also speculates that the marque’s upcoming Galaxy Starship 7 will be the model to debut this new tech. Additionally, Geely also showed off its latest Aegis lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery tech at the 2024 WNEVC mentioned.
Citing documents filed by Geely with China's MIIT, the firm's new Thor PHEV is poised to debut in the upcoming Galaxy Starship 7 model.
Geely’s new Thor PHEV system is set to rival directly against the BYD DM 5.0 PHEV system, and the figures touted by Geely in their recent filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) backs this up.
Through Geely’s MIIT filings, the Thor PHEV tech primed in the Galaxy Starship 7 firstly harnesses a 1.5-litre combustion mill that outputs 110 HP. Likely a 4-cyl petrol unit, said mill stands slightly peppier than the rivalling BYD system, which also uses a 1.5-litre mill rated at only 99 HP.
Of course, with any PHEV package, the other element here is the hybrid electric motor and battery paired with he mill. Though details on this tech in Geely’s Thor system remains undisclosed, it is expected to at least match BYD’s, but offer a lot more range and lower fuel consumption.
As a refresher, the BYD DM 5.0 PHEV tech primed in the Song Pro model sees its accompanying e-motor output 161 HP, a combined total range of 1,400 KM, as well as fuel consumption as low as 3.79 litres/100 KM. Keep in mind though that the latter two figures are based on rather lenient CLTC test cycles.
Unlike the rivalling BYD DM 5.0 PHEV tech, Geely's new Thor PHEV tech promises high thermal efficiency of up to 46%, along with CLTC-rated combined range of up to 2,000 KM and ultra-low sub-3 litres/100 KM fuel consumption.
In contrast, Geely’s Thor PHEV tech promises up to 2,000 KM of combined range and sub-3 litres/100 KM fuel economy figures (again, both based on CLTC test cycles). Adding to which is Geely’s claims that said new Thor PHEV system boasts a high thermal efficiency rate of 46%.
Geely also touts that the Thor PHEV system in the Galaxy Starship 7 will harness the world’s first ultra-high-performance drive motor test-bench, boasting a maximum speed of 30,000 RPM to cover voltage platforms rated up to 1,200 volts.
