The all-new Subaru Chiffon Try debuts as a cute-looking yet tough Kei car that is designed for the outdoors.

Another day, another adventure-geared kei car making its way into the Japanese domestic market, and this time around it’s from Subaru, with the new outdoorsy variant for its kei car model, the Chiffon Try.

And just like its adversaries, the Chiffon Try is decked out with several off-road-inspired styling bits and pieces to differentiate it from other Chiffon variants. Key highlights include the black-hued plastic body cladding at all sides of the car, a faux silver skid plate at the front, a revised front grille, roof rails, and many more.

Besides the additional plastic decor, the Chiffon Try is also offered in several special colourways, including this flagship Lake Blue Metallic hue that comes in both single- and two-tone options.

One unique selling point for the Chiffon Try is the “miracle open door” design that sacrifices the B-pillars for larger door openings on this Kei car. Further easing your entry and egress processes are the powered rear sliding doors—a typical trait seen in many Kei cars in Japan.

The outdoorsy treatment is less prominent as we get inside the Chiffon Try, where the first thing you’ll notice upon entering the car is the waterproof fabric upholstery with striking orange piping and stitches. Speaking of seats, the front passenger seat can be flat-folded together with the rear ones, enabling users to haul longer loads. Other than that, standard amenities like the 9-inch infotainment screen are all present in this rugged kei car.

Based on the fourth-gen Daihatsu Tanto, the Subaru Chiffon Try gets its motivation from a 660 CC 3-cyl nat-asp engine that delivers 51 HP and 60 NM to either its front (FWD) or all four wheels (AWD) via a CVT automatic transmission. Important to note that the AWD model costs JPY 110,000 (RM3,166) more than the standard FWD variant, meaning that you need to fork some extra dough to get the best out of your rugged kei car.

Order books for the all-new Subaru Chiffon Try have been opened in Japan, with prices starting from JPY 1.665 million (RM47,935) onwards. Given the current popularity of adventure-geared kei cars, we’d reckon this won’t be the last example to make its local debut this year.
