Deputy MOT Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah recently stated that between Jan and Oct 2024, there were 532,125 road accidents reported in the country. From which, 5,364 were fatal.

Furthermore, motorcyclists and pillion riders accounted for 68% of these fatalities, underscoring the critical need for improved road safety measures.

He also went on to emphasise the urgency of tackling this issue, through road safety campaigns that are enhanced and sustained across all levels of society, particularly targeting motorcyclists.

“Motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable road users. Strengthening their safety awareness, riding skills, and knowledge of traffic laws is essential,” he said.

Hasbi highlighted this during the recent Safe Riding Clinic which was held in conjunction with the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR) 2024 which aimed at equipping motorcyclists with practical skills to handle emergencies and make informed decisions on the road.

He further noted that, “the Safe Riding Clinic is not just about riding techniques; it’s a comprehensive approach to fostering safer roads for everyone,” and that the government is urging all road users to play their part in fostering a culture of safety and responsibility.

Hasbi's statement during WDoR 2024 was delivered by Road Transport Department deputy director-general (Planning and Operations), Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi.
