Formula One has confirmed that General Motors (Cadillac) will be part of its grid as the 11th team from the 2026 season onwards.

It’s official. Following its bid rejection earlier this year, General Motors (GM) and Cadillac are set to join the Formula One (F1) grid as the eleventh outfit from the 2026 season onwards. This was confirmed by F1 via its official website, making the American outfit the latest addition to the F1 grid since Haas joined back in 2016.

News of both GM and Cadillac joining the F1 grid started last year, as renowned racing outfit Andretti Global applied to join the pinnacle of motorsport by itself before seeking help and backing from the Detroit-based automaker. However, both Andretti's first and its joint bids with GM were being rejected by the commercial rights holder of the series, Formula One Management (FOM), despite getting earlier blessings from F1’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).

Since then, both Andretti and GM have been continuing their heavy investment in the F1 programme, while the outfit's current boss, Michael Andretti, is taking a backseat from day-to-day operations. In place of Andretti is one of the outfit’s close partners, Dan Towriss, who was present at last week’s Las Vegas Grand Prix prior to the official announcement.

Besides the Andretti family stepping back from direct operations of this new GM-Andretti racing outfit, F1 also confirms that the new team will no longer carry the Andretti name. However, former F1 world champion and founder of the Andretti racing empire, Mario Andretti, retains his directorial role on the team’s board.

This sudden change of F1’s attitude towards an eleventh outfit joining the grid is credited to the recent power shift happening within its parent company, Liberty Media. NBC reported that then-CEO of Liberty Media Greg Maffei was one of the key individuals who rejected Andretti’s bid into F1, citing that he would do everything in his power “to see that Michael [Andretti] never enters Formula 1.”

Back to the new GM-Cadillac F1 team, this new outfit is set to use customer engines for the first two seasons before debuting its own power unit in 2028. Although GM has yet to confirm which power units the outfit will use, rumours have suggested that it might be coming from either Ferrari or Red Bull (RBPT).

Power units aside, neither GM nor Cadillac have also yet to share any details regarding their future drivers’ lineup, but we can expect to hear more rumours about this as we get closer to the team’s F1 debut later in 2026.
