Photo: ST. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said yesterday that the special committee addressing the Johor Causeway congestion has agreed to move forward with the purchase of a QR system for the causeway, and that the border crossing with Singapore will be finalized by the end of this year.
Saifuddin was quoted by Bernama as stating that the decision was made after the proof of concept (POC) after a QR Code System was introduced at the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) and the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex during the first phase, which concentrated on Malaysian motorcyclists and bus passengers starting on June 1.
“It was agreed in the meeting to finalise the procurement process for the QR code system this year following the POC submission. It was also agreed that use of the QR be extended to travellers on other forms of transport, to be implemented in phases next year,” he said.
According to the minister, long-term preparations are underway to spread the usage of QR codes to foreigners, much like how foreigners now use Malaysian autogates.

The QR code method has been quite successful in reducing border traffic congestion because it is utilized by travelers, who account for more than 80% of the 400,000 daily crossings. Since the POC started, around 350,000 Malaysian pillion riders and bus and motorcycle users have registered for the QR code, Saifuddin added.
Additionally, according to The Star, officials are looking into the possibility of extending the system's use to car users. The state government anticipates that the automobile QR system may be tested before the POC time concludes, according to Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, head of the Johor State Works, Transportation, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee.
