The Ministry of Transport has procured 10 new KTM ETS train sets, set to be operational later in Q1 2025.

In a bid to increase service efficiency and frequency, the Malaysian Ministry of Transport (MoT) has acquired 10 new train sets for KTM’s electric train service (ETS). As reported by Bernama, these new train sets are expected to be operational sometime later in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025.

This revelation was made by its deputy minister, YB Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, who responded to a question by YB Senator Baharuddin Ahmad, who wanted to know the ETS passenger statistics this year, especially to destinations in Perlis, as well as the government’s efforts to improve the ETS service, which saw an increase in recent years, especially during festive seasons.

According to the deputy minister, this fleet expansion effort is jointly made by the ministry together with its agencies, such as the Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), to ensure safe and efficient ETS train services in the future.

“The MoT is very concerned about the high demand from users for ETS. Currently, 10 existing ETS train sets are undergoing level four maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), which is scheduled to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025.

“This is to ensure that these electric trains are in the best condition and reliable for ETS operations. MRO level three and four works will continue for the remaining 14 ETS trains currently in operation, starting in the first quarter of 2025,” the deputy MoT minister said during the question and answer session in the Dewan Negara yesterday.

In addition to the 10 new train sets for KTM ETS, Hasbi said the government is also in the process of procuring 50 additional train sets comprising both the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) and Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU).

In response to Baharuddin’s question about ETS passenger statistics in Perlis, he said that there are two railway stations served by ETS trains in the state, namely the Arau and Padang Besar stations, with a total of 490,105 passengers recorded from January to October last year, making for an average of 1,600 passengers per day.
