The government will begin transitioning its official vehicles to EVs in stages starting next year, according to Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. He also added that the process is already underway pending finalization by the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

Nik Nazmi emphasized that the transition will not occur overnight, but tangible progress is expected to begin as early as next year. He made this statement during the launch of the Transition Guideline for Government Vehicles to EVs.

This transition however will also depend on departmental needs and the MOF's approval. "We must assess operational requirements and determine if domestic or other EV options can meet these needs," Nik Nazmi explained.

The transition guidelines launched was developed with input from technical experts and stakeholders, providing a roadmap for EV adoption for the government. Key components highlighted in the guideline include fleet inventory evaluation, EV selection, charging infrastructure planning, cost analysis, and carbon emission reduction strategies.

Other aspects related to safety, monitoring, reporting and training is also prioritized to ensure a smooth transition.

Nik Nazmi went on to detail that the initiative would eventually reduce long-term operational and maintenance costs while improving environmental sustainability.

As part of the initiative, Nik Nazmi launched the first 60kW DCFC station at the NRES Headquarters in Block F11, Complex F at Putrajaya yesterday.

During the launch he added, "this move supports Putrajaya's vision of becoming a low-carbon city by 2025 and showcases NRES Headquarters as a model for low-carbon government facilities."

With this transition guidelines, NRES also aims to simplify EV ownership, promote green infrastructure and inspire other ministries and agencies to adopt similar practices. This initiative will also position Malaysia as a leader in EV adoption and sustainability space.
