- Govt Working On Targeted Toll Exemptions For Festive Seasons
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government is refining its approach to toll exemptions during festive seasons. The new approach will focus on providing more specialized arrangements for specific groups.
Anwar, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, clarified that toll exemptions should not be granted to everyone, as has been the practice in previous years. He emphasized that the exemptions should target the B40 and M40 income groups, rather than benefiting everyone, including the wealthy who drive luxury cars.
“This is currently being refined. Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has only outlined the basic principles, stating that we cannot continue to subsidise everything like electricity and fuel,” Anwar said during a press conference following his working visit to the World Economic Forum 2025 Annual Meeting.
The Prime Minister stated that the government intends to prioritize lower-income groups in their policy adjustments. This decision follows public criticism regarding the inequity of blanket toll exemptions.
Earlier this week, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced the discontinuation of universal toll exemptions during holidays, effective from 2024. The Cabinet has opted for a more targeted approach, with specifics to be announced shortly.
