- JPJ Can't Simply Revoke Licences Of Mentally Disabled Drivers - Loke
JPJ is facing calls to revoke the driving licenses of individuals diagnosed with mental disabilities by the Ministry of Health (MOH). This follows a viral incident in Terengganu where a motorcyclist with a mental disability was assaulted by a group of people after crashing into a stall.
The National Road User Association (PPJK) has emphasized the necessity of thorough evaluations and assessments to determine the potential danger posed by individuals with mental disabilities before granting or revoking their driving privileges. They argue that such measures are crucial to ensure the safety of all road users.
According to its President Fahami Ashrof Badaruddin, PPJK will write to JPJ or the Ministry of Transport (MOT) to make sure driving schools are aware of students with mental disabilities. He also urged MOH to notify JPJ of any individuals who have mental disabilities so that their driving licenses would be revoked.
Speaking out on the subject, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook clarified that the government does not have a policy to cancel or revoke the driving licenses of persons with disabilities (OKU), even those with mental disabilities. He emphasized that OKU drivers should not be blamed for isolated incidents involving the group.
The government does not have a policy of victimising all OKUs, he noted, because they also require licenses for their day-to-day operations. Instead, appropriate action will be taken depending on individual circumstances, Loke says.
