The third-gen Crosstrek gains a new 2026MY Hybrid guise for North America. This is Subaru's third attempt at launcing a hybridised Crosstrek(XV) model for North America.

Subaru revealed its new Crosstrek Hybrid crossover for the North America late last week. This is the automaker’s third attempt to introduce an electrified version of the Crosstrek (previously known as the XV) in arguably its most critical overseas market.

Subaru previously offered the Crosstrek in North America as a hybrid in 2014, and later as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in 2019. Neither proved commercially successful and were axed form the line-up. However, this third attempt might be the one that finally sticks around and sells.

Different naming aside, this Hybrid variant is similar to the Crosstrek S:HEV version Subaru launched in Japan late last year.

That’s because this new Crosstrek Hybrid is similar to the Crosstrek S:HEV model introduced in its Japanese home market back in Oct 2024. As a refresher, Subaru touts the Crosstrek S-HEV version as a crossover that packs a “strong hybrid” heart.

And its appears same “strong hybrid” package powers this new North American version featured. It consists of an Atkinson Cycle version of the marque’s ubiquitous 2.5-litre ‘Boxer’ flat 4-cyl petrol mill augmented by an e-motor and compact 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Individually, the combustion (ICE) half boasts 192 HP and 209 NM whilst the electric half adds 118 HP and 270 NM into the mix. Combined, the new North American version claims to offer up to 194 HP, but total combined torque remains undisclosed.

Much of the kit and features primed aboard mirror what's seen in the Japanese market version, including the EyeSight ADAS suite, digital displays, Lineartronic CVT box, and more.

Unchanged too is the powertrain’s pairing with Subaru’s other signatures, those being its Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission and symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Notably, the latter is powered by the ICE mill and not the e-motor as how most rivalling hybrid crossovers do.

Set to be marketed as a 2026 model, the Crosstrek Hybrid for North America gets two exclusive exterior colours – Sand Dune Pearl and Citron Yellow Pearl. It also rolls on 18-inch dark grey alloy wheels.

Beyond North America, the Crosstrek Hybrid is expected to enter other markets soon, tough we reckon it will be a while before it reaches markets like ours.

On board, equipment and kit mirrors the Japanese market model again. Highlights include Subaru’s EyeSight ADAS suite, along with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 11.6-inch Starlink infotainment system.

Whilst this latest electrified iteration of the third-gen Crosstrek (XV) enters North America, the base third-gen model still remains unavailable select markets like ours. Given the recent management reshuffling at its ASEAN distributors, it remains uncertain when this might change.
