Tesla issued its first recall for the calendar year 2025 recently, citing a problem with the rearview camera. In 2024, Tesla issued more recalls than any other automaker, with a total of 16 recalls in the calendar year.

A reverse current may result in a shorting failure on the computer board of one of the affected vehicles when it turns on, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) filing. Rearview camera functionality is lost as a result, which "may affect the driver's rear visibility and increase the risk of a collision."

The carmaker ascribed the issues to a particular series of hardware and software setups along with lower temperatures. The issue affects 2024-25 Model 3 and Model S vehicles, as well as 2023-25 Model X and Model Y vehicles. The specific total of cars affected is 239,382.

Tesla began pushing out an over-the-air (OTA) software update on December 18, 2024, to address the fault, and all affected owners are expected to get notification letters on or shortly after January 8, 2025.

Although an OTA update that doesn't necessitate a trip to the service centre can at least partially address this recall, this isn't usually the case with Tesla recalls. A small number of Model S and Model X were recently recalled by the company due to an airbag problem that requires airbag replacement.

Many of the seven recalls of the Tesla Cybertruck during its first year of sale were also caused by hardware problems rather than software ones.

The NHTSA has recently announced a preliminary inquiry into 2.6 million Tesla electric vehicles equipped with the Actually Smart Summon remote driving technology. That comes after another federal investigation, launched in October, into 2.4 million Teslas equipped with what the carmaker calls Full Self-Driving, following reports of four incidents and one fatality involving that system.
