tyre_rental.jpg The transport ministry is considering amending current legislation to prevent the use of "tyre rentals" to circumvent vehicle inspections. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah stated that while heavy vehicles are allowed to install new tires for inspection, they cannot revert to their old, non-compliant tires once the inspection is complete.

In an article in The Star, he also mentioned that the ministry is aware of syndicates, sometimes called "cosmetic agents," that rent tires or other spare parts to rig vehicle inspection clearances at Puspakom.

“This is an irresponsible act that compromises road safety and the integrity of the vehicle inspection system,” said Hasbi in the Dewan Rakyat
The Minister emphasized that his ministry worked closely with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) last year to address misconduct among Puspakom inspectors.

Furthermore, he indicated that a comprehensive review of the existing legal framework is underway. The primary goal of this review is to determine the feasibility of amending laws to impose stricter penalties on individuals found guilty of engaging in such illicit activities.

“Individuals suspected of wrongdoing have been detained for questioning under the MACC Act 2009. 20 inspection officers were investigated, with 13 suspended from duty,” Hasbi added.

The Ministry of Transport is also initiating a collaborative effort with the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), aimed to elevate the overall safety standards of vehicles on Malaysian roads by ensuring that all vehicles undergo rigorous and comprehensive inspections.
