During a Q&A session in Dewan Rakyat earlier today, Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke detailed that his ministry will announce new companies approved for the now open Motor Vehicle Inspection Centres (PPKM) service tomorrow (Friday, 7 Feb).

This move follows the government’s decision last year to end Puspakom’s monopoly in providing vehicle inspection services. Loke said increased competition will improve service quality and enhance the integrity of inspections.

He was responding to Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi), who questioned whether the long-standing monopoly had led to syndicates approving unsafe vehicles.

Loke explained that the evaluation process for new operators has been completed. Companies were assessed based on compliance with requirements, financial capability, and their ability to conduct inspections for the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

He also clarified that Puspakom no longer holds a concession but now operates under a license. However presently you can only go to Puspakom as none of the other parties have been given the greenlight to operate under the new provisions of the Road Transport Act (Act 333).

While he did not directly link monopolies to corruption, he acknowledged that monopolies can sometimes affect service quality.
