Puspakom Warns Against Misleading Tint Claims

Puspakom is setting the record straight after a popular tint film brand began issuing warranty cards suggesting their products might fail Puspakom inspections, despite being "JPJ-compliant."

Calling the claim misleading and baseless, Puspakom CEO Mahmood Razak Bahman said it creates unnecessary confusion for car owners and unfairly drags the inspection body into the issue.

“To be clear, we don’t set our own tint rules,” Mahmood said. “Our job is to enforce JPJ’s regulations, and we apply them consistently during inspections.”

He warned tint companies and runners not to use Puspakom’s name to scare or mislead the public into spending more than they need to. Doing so, he added, damages trust and makes life harder for drivers.

One of the most common reasons vehicles fail the tint test, he explained, isn’t because the film is non-compliant but because the combination of factory-tinted glass and added film pushes the total visibility below the legal limit.

“Some cars come with slightly tinted glass from the factory. So even if the film meets JPJ standards on clear glass, it may not pass when applied over factory tint,” Mahmood said.

He also reminded the public of the actual JPJ guidelines: a minimum of 70% visible light transmission (VLT) for the front windscreen, 50% for the front side windows, and no limits for the rear.

If a car doesn’t meet these levels, it won’t pass, regardless of what the product label says. “We’re just enforcing what’s on the books. If your tint meets JPJ rules, you have nothing to worry about,” he added.

At the end of the day, Mahmood urged drivers not to be pressured by scare tactics or false claims. “Know the rules, understand your car’s specs, and don’t be fooled into making unnecessary changes.”
