It has been revealed that over RM1.9 billion was spent by the Govt via the Works Ministry last year to maintain federal roads across Peninsular Malaysia last year.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Linggi reportedly revealed that his ministry spent over RM1.9 billion to maintain roads in 11 states across Peninsular Malaysia last year.

The minister revealed this as part of a response to a question raised by Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan in Dewan Rakyat recently where asked about the sum allocated for road maintenance in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.

Datuk Seri Alexander then detailed that the total sum spent to maintain these roads across Peninsular Malaysia was RM1.909 billion. The expenditure covered works performed over a 13,596.85 KM stretch of roads.

The effort included routine maintenance, periodic pavement and non-pavement maintenance, bridge maintenance, streetlamps and signal lights, as well as small maintenance allocations for each district engineer.

The minister also revealed RM317,973 million was spent in Sabah last year to cover the same road maintenance aspect as in Peninsular Malaysia. He adds the sum noted represents 13.23% of the total budget allocated, whilst neighbouring Sarawak and Labuan each received 6.378% and 0.95%.

Altogether, road works and maintenance across Peninsular Malaysia took up 79.45% of the allocated budget last year, averaging 7.22% for each state

"To address and reduce maintenance backlogs, the ministry is always working towards obtaining additional allocations from the Finance Ministry to ensure the safety and comfort of road users in Sabah," added Nanta.
