Effective April 1, Makoto Uchida (left) will step down from his role as CEO at Nissan. Current CPO Ivan Espinosa (right) was named as his successor.

Following a board members meeting held earlier today, embattled Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. (Nissan) has just announced a leadership change. Effective April 1, current CEO Makoto Uchida will step down from said role whilst Ivan Espinosa named as his successor.

Espinosa’s appointment as CEO is Nissan’s fourth in less than six years, and it comes at perhaps the most challenging of situations too – Nissan is in its worse financial state historically, and it is still reeling in from the fallout of its failed merger talks with rivals Honda.

Following the failed merger talks with rivals Honda, Uchida (left) has reportedly been under pressure internally to step down as CEO.

Prior to his promotion as CEO, Espinosa served as Chief Planning Officer (CPO) at the automaker. His appointment also ends weeks of speculation as to who will lead Nissan – current CEO Uchida has been under pressure to step down following the failed Honda merger talks.

It remains unclear if Espinosa, 46, would put the Honda merger talks back on the table or open the possibility of investment from another partner. Espinosa, who joined Nissan in 2003, spent much of his career in Mexico but has also held positions in Europe and South East Asia.

Espinosa's appointment ends weeks of speculation as to who will lead Nissan. It remains unclear if the 46-year-old exec will reboot merger talks with rivals Honda just yet.

Espinosa has reportedly overseen product planning and development initiatives and managed the Nissan’s global product strategy and portfolio. He took his current CPO role since April 2024 as part of a management shake-up aimed at accelerating Nissan's pivot to electric vehicles (EVs).

As this is fresh and developing, expect more details, namely in the matter of business direction, to be announced soon.
