Chinese auto giant BYD shows no signs of slowing down, outselling Tesla in Germany and the UK in April. This contrasts sharply with Tesla's sales decline, indicating BYD's growing foothold in the European market.

Last month, over 380,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs) were sold by the automaker, a 21% rise over April 2024. Notably, for the first time in over a year, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have surpassed those of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), with BEV sales reaching over 195,000 units, a 45% year-over-year gain.

BYD also experienced its fifth consecutive month of increased international sales, reaching over 79,000 units last month. Year-To-Date as of April, the firm has sold over 285,000 vehicles internationally, more than double the sales volume from the same period last year.
In Germany, BYD's April 2025 sales surpassed Tesla's, with 1,566 units sold, an increase of 756% compared to April 2024. Tesla sold only 855 vehicles, a 46% decline.
Meanwhile in the UK EV market, Tesla's still slightly ahead of BYD in registrations as of April, with about 13,000 units sold versus BYD's nearly 12,000.

BYD is experiencing a significant and likely sustained increase in overseas sales. This growth is supported by recent improvements in export logistics, including the addition of new roll-on/roll-off ships and enhancements to both rail and sea transportation this year.
