- Mazda EZ-6 Gains New ‘Sports Edition’ Version in China
Changan Mazda has unveiled a sportier ‘Sports Edition’ version of its already sleek Mazda EZ-6 EV saloon in China.
In case you think the already sleek Mazda EZ-6 isn’t sporty enough for your liking, good news because Changan Mazda has just unveiled a sportier version of its EV saloon, known as the Mazda EZ-6 Sports Edition.
Also known as the Mazda 6e in overseas markets, the EZ-6 gains several sporty visual upgrades for this new Sports Edition version. Key highlights include several black-hued exterior parts such as the front lip, side skirts, side mirrors, and rear bumper accents, new 19-inch gloss black alloy wheels with red-hued callipers to match, and many more.
The Sports Edition treatment continues as we get inside this special EZ-6, where it gets flashes of red accents and stitching around the cabin, which contrast well with its dark grey-hued Alcantara upholstery. Further accentuating the sportiness are the red backlighting for the interior surfaces and mesh-patterned accents on the central console.
Besides the sporty visual bits, the EZ-6 Sports Edition still gets all the creature comforts found in its vanilla twin, including the 14.6-inch central infotainment screen, a larger 50-inch augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, a 14-speaker Sony audio system, and many more.
As of now, Changan Mazda has yet to confirm whether the EZ-6 Sports Edition gets any mechanical or performance upgrades over its standard siblings. But given how not-so-extensive the sporty upgrades are, we suspect this is merely a trim package upgrade.
For reference, the EZ-6 in China comes in two types: a battery electric vehicle (BEV) and a range-extender electric vehicle (REEV). The BEV has a single, rear-mounted (RWD) electric motor that can produce up to 255 HP and 320 Nm, and it can travel up to 600 km (CLTC) on a full charge thanks to its 68.8-kWh LFP battery.
Meanwhile, the REEV version packs a 1.5-litre 4-cyl nat-asp petrol engine that hooks up to a 215 HP and 320 Nm-rated electric motor, while its 28.4-kW LFP battery provides an EV-only range of up to 200 km (CLTC). Combined, the whole setup promises to deliver over 1,300 km of CLTC range, thus making it on par with some other Chinese plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) out there.
As of now, Changan Mazda has yet to confirm the exact price or availability of the new Mazda EZ-6 Sports Edition, be it in the domestic Chinese market or overseas. Its export twin, the Mazda 6e, has already made its official debut in Europe, while its preview at this year’s Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) indicates that this sleek EV saloon is ready to make its Thai market entry and possibly ours too.
