- Proton Posts Strong April Sales, e.MAS 7 Leads EV Market
Proton recorded a strong sales performance in April, boosting its market share and securing its position as the second best-selling automotive brand in Malaysia.
The company sold a total of 12,692 units last month across both domestic and export sales, as well as sales of its smart Automobile and Proton e.MAS products via its PRO-NET arm. This marks a 14.7% increase compared to April 2024, but there’s also an 8.8% drop from March 2025’s total of 13,918 units.
The overall automotive market however only grew by 1.8% year-on-year (YoY), with an estimated Total Industry Volume (TIV) of 60,886 units. Compared to March 2025, the TIV dropped by 16.3% as the effective season spike ends.
A major contributor to this success is the Proton e.MAS 7, which has shown consistent growth since its Dec 2024 launch. In April 2925 alone, 863 units were sold, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) total to 2,716 units. This makes it the best-selling EV in Malaysia, and puts Proton e.MAS in second place for overall EV sales, even with only one model offering.
The e.MAS 7’s popularity means EVs now make up 6% of Proton’s total sales. Meanwhile, Proton's traditional models also continued to perform well. The Proton X50 sold 2,389 units in April, its best monthly figure for the year. Its YTD total now stands at 7,506 units, making it the top-selling B-segment SUV.
The X90 led the D-segment SUV category with 194 units sold in April, pushing its total to 873 units this year. The S70 remained the top-selling C-segment sedan with 1,716 units sold last month, bringing its YTD total to 6,181 units.
The X70 also continued its growth, selling 682 units in April and reaching 2,839 units so far in 2025. This puts it 44% ahead of its sales at the same time last year.
Other models also did well. The Saga recorded 5,213 units in April, nearing 21,000 units for the year. The Persona sold 1,328 units and remains the second best-selling B-segment sedan while the Proton Iriz had 290 units sold.
Proton CEO Roslan Abdullah noted that while overall industry sales in 2025 are currently 5% behind last year’s record pace - the company is using this period to build a strong foundation for growth in the second half of the year.
He went on to credit the public’s warm response to the e.MAS 7 and teased new launches for both EV and ICE models in the months ahead - e.MAS 5 and the MC3 Saga possibly?
Exports also saw growth in April, rising to 520 units — the highest monthly figure so far this year. Leading the charge were the X50, Saga, and e.MAS 7. Notably, the e.MAS 7 was previewed at The Car Expo in Singapore, marking Proton’s return to the island republic just across the Johor causeway after over a decade’s absence with a special ‘Founder Edition’ limited release.
Additionally, the locally assembled Proton X70 was also launched in Bangladesh in April 2025, and the upgraded model is expected to help build Proton’s presence there.
