- ADaPTiV: MARii, Petronas Smart Vehicle Maintenance Tech
The Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) has teamed up with Petronas Global Technical Solutions Sdn Bhd (PGTSSB) to bring a major shift in how vehicles are maintained, using advanced technology.
PGTSSB, which handles project management and technical services for Petronas, will work with MARii to roll out a system called ADaPTiV (Advanced Diagnostic and Prognostic Technology for Vehicles).
This technology was originally created to monitor and improve the performance of equipment in the energy sector. Now, it will be adapted for the automotive industry to predict potential problems in vehicles before they happen.
ADaPTiV uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse real-time data from a vehicle's components. It can detect signs of wear or failure early and suggest actions to prevent breakdowns. With the help of the Internet of Things (IoT), it enables maintenance based on actual conditions rather than fixed schedules.
By combining AI, IoT and big data analytics, the system provides insights that help improve vehicle performance and promote safer, smarter driving habits.
According to MARii, this project fits into Malaysia’s broader goals under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Automotive Policy 2020 by supporting the development of smarter and more sustainable mobility solutions.
According to MARii CEO Azrul Reza Aziz, the collaboration is a major milestone that combines MARii’s experience in automotive innovation with Petronas’ strength in predictive analytics. He said the aim is to build a smarter, more reliable vehicle ecosystem for the future.
Meanwhile, Petronas Senior GM, Mazri Mohd Ali added that this move shows Petronas’ dedication to engineering innovation beyond the energy sector. He believes ADaPTiV will make vehicles safer, more reliable, and cheaper to maintain.
The first working prototype of ADaPTiV was revealed at the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2025 (MAS 2025) where technical experts were on hand to demonstrate how the system works and answer questions.
MARii said ADaPTiV will help drivers avoid sudden breakdowns, reduce maintenance costs, and extend the life of vehicle parts. It also has potential uses beyond the auto industry in any area where predictive maintenance could improve efficiency and cut costs.
