- Chery-Backed Anwa Rolls Out First Solid-State Battery Samples
Chery is making major moves in next-generation battery technology with the first batch of solid-state battery (SSB) engineering samples rolling off the production line in Wuhu, China.
These batteries are developed by Anhui Anwa New Energy Technology, a company established in 2020. Chery New Energy holds a 9.89% stake in Anwa, while battery giant Gotion High-Tech owns 5.89%.
The first-generation solid-state battery from Anwa offers an energy density of 300 Wh/kg. More importantly, it has passed China’s latest “No Fire No Explosion” safety certification, an increasingly important benchmark for EV batteries.
Anwa’s factory adopts a full-chain production process that includes automatic coating of positive and negative electrodes, composite diaphragm assembly, and dynamic heat sealing. The use of laser slitting also helps reduce dust pollution during production.
The facility’s five-step dry manufacturing method reduces energy consumption by 20% and fixed asset investment by 30% compared to traditional methods. The production line stretches over 35 metres and operates at a speed of 20 metres per minute.
Trial production has already started on second-generation solid-state batteries with a higher energy density of 400 Wh/kg. Anwa aims to begin volume production of third-generation batteries with 500 Wh/kg by 2027.
Looking ahead, the company plans to build a 5 GWh solid-state battery R&D centre and fully automated production base, as it scales its ambitions in China’s competitive EV battery landscape.
While Anwa has not confirmed which vehicles will first use these batteries, a prototype of the Exeed Exlantix ET was previously spotted with “All-solid-state battery” branding—suggesting that Chery’s premium models may lead the adoption.
With its investment in solid-state battery development through Anwa, Chery is positioning itself for a future of safer, lighter, and more energy-dense EVs, signalling a significant step toward next-generation electrification.
