Chery Pioneers GWh Level Solid State Battery Production Line in Wuhu

Chery is set to revolutionise battery technology with the world’s first GWh-level all-solid-state battery production line, located in the Wuhu Economic and Technological Development Zone.
According to an Anhui Daily report, equipment for the facility was delivered on Nov 18, marking a significant milestone for this ambitious project.

Spanning approximately 100,000 square metres, Chery’s solid state battery project is a collaboration between Anhui Anwa New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. and the Wuhu Economic and Technological Development Zone.
Established in 2020, Anhui Anwa is a subsidiary of Chery Holdings, with shareholders including Global Power Synergy (Thailand), Azeba (Japan), and Gotion Hi-Tech.

The facility will host a 5 GWh R&D centre and an advanced automated production line however, the initial production phase will be set at a capacity of 1.25 GWh. This is poised to be the world’s first large-scale solid-state battery production line.

“Compared to traditional batteries, solid-state batteries offer superior safety, environmental benefits, and significantly higher energy density,” said Gao Lixin, general manager of Anhui Anwa New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.

The first-generation solid-state batteries from this line will boast an energy density exceeding 280 Wh/kg. By 2025, a second generation solid state battery is expected to achieve over 400 Wh/kg, with a third generation reaching 500 Wh/kg by 2027.
These solid state batteries benefit from a streamlined production process where manufacturing steps are cut down from the conventional 11 to just 5, eliminating stages such as baking, compaction, and liquid injection plus cuts fixed asset investment by 30% and energy consumption by 20%.
