Report: BYD Leads 1H 2025 Sales Amongst Major Chinese Automakers

According to a recent report by CarNewsChina citing domestic Chinese media sources, the leading six Chinese carmakers collectively shifted nearly 9 million units throughout the first half (1H) of this year (2025).

Said figures comes despite relatively mild pricing environment, as well as both Chinese government’s trade-in subsidies and domestic and overseas demands reportedly touted as the key growth drivers here.

The report adds that the combined sales of six leading Chinese automakers totalling at 8,792,900 units in H1 2025. Several firms even achieved record-high monthly sales here too.

BYD is reportedly buoyed by strong sales charted by its range of NEVs.


Leading the pack is NEV-making giants BYD, and it maintains top-seller position with its 1H 2025 sales total of 2,146,000 units. The firm marked a 33.04% year-on-year (YoY) growth too – a significant increase from 1,613,000 units shifted same period last year.

Whilst on BYD still, the firm is also buoyed by strong sales last month (June), especially from its NEVs. The firm saw NEVs chart a sales total of 382,600 units throughout June alone, up from the 341,700 units charted YoY too.

SAIC Group - parent firm to brands like MG Motor pictured - ranks second, charting over 2 million unit sales and six consecutive months of YoY growth.


Placing second and trailing not too far off BYD are SAIC Group – parent firm to brands like MG Motor. The firm also saw its sales surpass the 2 million units mark, totalling at 2,053,000 units to chart a 12.4% YoY growth too.

Notably, SAIC Group has demonstrated consistent upward trend in sales throughout 2024, with its June 2025 sales total of 365,000 units marking not just a 21.6% YoY growth, it also sees the firm chart its sixth consecutive month of YoY growth too.

Geely Auto ranks as China's third top-selling automaker for 1H 2025 as its sales totalled at 1,409,000 units. The firm charted the largest YoY growth rate of 47% too.


Ranking third here is Geely Auto, which saw its 1H 2025 sales totalling at 1,409,000 units. The effort also sees the firm chart the biggest YoY growth rate amongst the top six Chinese automakers (Changan Auto – 4th, Chery Group – 5th and Great Wall Motor – 6th)  at 47%.

Moreover, the Zhejiang-rooted privately-owned conglomerate expressed strong optimism for its efforts in the second half (H2) of the year too, evident by its move to raise its full-year sales target of 2.71 million units prior by 11% to an even 3 million units.
